Coco Gauff responds after being accused of having ‘child mentality’ | Tennis | sport

Coco Gauff has responded directly on social media after a tennis fan accused the new China Open champion of having “the mentality of a five-year-old.”

The American star player claimed victory in Beijing by defeating Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 to secure her eighth WTA title, the first after parting ways with her former coach Brad Gilbert.

But shortly after lifting the caption, she took a photo and shared it on her Instagram story. She responded to the trolls by mocking their previous comments by writing a caption: “She only wins 250s…well…WOMP WOMP”

However, her reaction wasn’t taken kindly by a section of social media users as @hazvlou on .” “.

Except that Gauff himself responds directly to the post and says: “Honestly, children have the best attitude to life. They are so positive and creative. So I guess (heart emoji), my goal in this tournament was to play tennis and have fun with it. “As much as I did as a kid, because that’s when life is the most fun!”

When a fan jokingly told her that she should spend her time partying rather than doing X, Gauff wrote back: “I love you too! I’m bored and procrastinating about packing. I haven’t even downloaded the app I use on the website yet.” Not to go into it, but I like to pop in every now and then and see what’s going on lol.”

However, the 20-year-old won the second WTA 1000 title of her career on the court after her victory in Cincinnati in 2023, where she also defeated Muchova in the final.

“I want to congratulate you, Karolina, it’s great to see you on tour again,” said Gauff about her opponent after a long break. “I think you are such a great player. You deserve everything and hopefully you’ll play in many more finals.”

Gauff has now won eight of her nine WTA finals, a record that has improved since the signing of Matt Daley as Gilbert’s replacement during their Asian swing. And she was sure to thank her new coach.

“I would like to thank my team. “It’s our first tournament together as a complete team,” added Gauff. “Thanks Matt, this is our first tournament together and obviously it’s going well, so thanks for helping me this week.”

She also admitted that she was happy to be able to free herself from a possible “curse” regarding Carlos Alcaraz before reaching the final. “Carlos and I both went to the Forbidden City earlier this week,” Gauff explained.

“Anyone there [a press conference] wondered if it would bring luck. I thought, I don’t know, I don’t want to jinx it. Then Carlos won. At that time it was only the round of 16 for me. But I think the Imperial Palace brought us luck.”
