Equestrian took first place on both days of the Lynchburg IHSA Show

Rustburg, Virginia — The University of Lynchburg equestrian team held its IHSA show this past weekend and took first place on both Saturday and Sunday.

Lynchburg claimed the title on both days of competition, collecting 47 points on Saturday and 40 points on Sunday. At Saturday’s show, the Hornets took eight first-place finishes in all classes. Lynchburg secured four top finishes on Sunday, helping them to 40 points and beating Hollins (37 points) for first place.

senior Alexandria Russell was a standout player for the Hornets and was named the show’s high point driver on Sunday and reserve high point driver on Saturday. senior Lucy Metzler was another Hornet with an impressive performance as they took the highest score on Saturday.

On Saturday, Russell took first place in both competitions: Intermediate Fences Section B and Intermediate Flat Section A. Sunday was no different for the Ocean City, Maryland native as she took first place in Intermediate Flat and Intermediate Fences Section B. Metzler took first place in both the Open Fences Section B and the Open Flat Section B on Saturday, earning him the highest points finisher. On Sunday she placed second in the Open Flat and fifth in the Open Fences.

The Hornets hosted numerous artists at their IHSA home show, many in advance of their events. Freshmen Jessica McElhaney was another standout rider for Lynchburg, securing first place in the Limit Flat Section A on Saturday and Sunday and second place in the Limit Fences Section B on Sunday. Sophomore Clair Humphrey was another first place finisher both days for Lynchburg in the Novice Flat, Saturday was in Section B and Sunday was Section A.

Junior Ava Jackson took first place in the Limit Flat Section B. Senior on Saturday Margaret Stell took first place in Open Fences Section A on Saturday. Native of Hickory, NC Elle Nutting took second place in the Intermediate Fences Section A category on Saturday. Freshmen McKenzie Burch took second place in the Limit Flat section B. Junior on Sunday Sophia Schorr on both days in the introductory course and in the first year Natalie Holdren rounded out the Hornet cast with a fourth place finish in the Novice Flat Section A on Saturday.

The first day of the weekend-long event served as the equestrian team’s IHSA Senior Day. The graduating student-athletes were honored at the show Jenna Frazer, Elle Nutting, Bralynn Steppe, Hannah Hillyer, Margaret StellAnd Alexandria Russell.

Next, the Lynchburg equestrian team will split up to compete in an NCEA dual meet at Sewanee and an IHSA show hosted by Hollins on Saturday, Oct. 12.
