Off-campus shooting, dirt bike accident at the end of Morgan State University’s homecoming weekend

BALTIMORE – It was a busy weekend in Northeast Baltimore for police as they investigated a dirt bike crash and shooting near Morgan State University the night they returned home.

The shooting happened around 11:40 p.m. Saturday.

Patrol officers report they heard gunfire and were stopped near the intersection of Hillen Road and Cold Spring Lane by a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking when he heard gunshots and began running.

The man was taken to a hospital. His condition was not disclosed.

This all happened because the university police were working on it increase their security measures on campus before returning home.

To increase security, campus buildings were closed earlier on Homecoming Day and stricter enforcement measures were in place for those who disturbed the peace or broke the law.

“We recognize that our safety is essential,” said Amina Banks, a student at Morgan State University.

“It was a little loose compared to my first year, but it was still a good time,” said Yasmeen, a student at Morgan State University.

“But with the updates and things like that, you know, with the safety measures, it was good to go outside and it felt better,” explained Jordan Boyd, a senior at Morgan State University.

But once the homecoming activities were over, off-campus crowds could be seen filling the streets around campus.

Then, just before 9 p.m., officers responded to the 4200 block of Hillen Road for a report There was a collision between two dirt bikes.

According to police, one driver was a teenager and the other was a 24-year-old man.

Upon arrival, officers began CPR on the teen driver. When paramedics arrived, they continued CPR on the teen and then transported both drivers to the hospital.

According to police, the teenage driver is in stable condition. The 24-year-old driver remains in hospital with minor injuries.

According to Baltimore police, there were between 30 and 50 dirt bikes in the area at the time.

While the investigation into both off-campus incidents continues, some students remain positive.

“We’ve been extra cautious this year just based on last year’s experience,” Banks said

“It was just very impressive and very touching, you know, to see everyone come back and have real peace,” Boyd said.
