1 dead after police shooting in Wadsworth

One person died in a police shooting in Wadsworth Saturday evening, according to the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 9 p.m., Medina County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted Wadsworth police and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office with a suspected suicidal person, police said.

Initial information led police to believe the person was armed and had been threatened to commit suicide by a police officer, authorities said. The person was also believed to be on his way to Wadsworth High School, which resulted in it being placed on lockdown during the school’s homecoming.

Around 10 p.m., the subject’s vehicle was located on Silvercreek Road and a traffic stop was initiated, authorities said.

The person got out of the vehicle with a suspected firearm, authorities said. The deputies then fired their weapons.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene after law enforcement and emergency medical services performed life-saving measures, authorities said.

The investigation has been turned over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
