Everyone’s favorite speedrunning event, Games Done Quick, is hosting a show next week to raise funds for Hurricane Helene relief

After the damage caused by Hurricane Helene in the USA, Games Done Quick is gathering some speedrunners to raise some money to help.

At the end of September, Hurricane Helene hit the east coast of the USA and caused severe damage, especially in the southern Appalachians. The National Weather Service stated that “widespread severe and unprecedented flooding occurred, resulting in hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in property damage.” According to AP News, the death toll currently stands at 227, although the full extent of the matter remains unclear. From this Reason Games Done Quick, the biennial speedrunning event that raises money for charities like Doctors Without Borders, is hosting a disaster relief Done Quick event to support relief efforts.

“From October 11th to 13th, we will be hosting a disaster relief Done Quick event to support those affected by Hurricane Helene,” the official Games Done Quick Twitter account explained. “Donations during the event will go to Direct Relief.” If you’re a speedrunner, you currently have until today, October 6, 11:59 p.m. ET to submit a run. However, there are limitations due to the rush to put this event together, as everything is console-only and random generators are required -stream tracking is not allowed.

If you’ve never heard of Direct Relief, it’s a charity that “works to equip health care professionals in resource-poor communities to meet the challenges of diagnosing and caring for people in need,” and in the case of Hurricane Helene This case in particular “has already offered assistance to more than 50 safety net health providers in the path of the storm” and will “continue to assess the needs of affected areas and provide resources such as emergency medical supplies, hygiene kits and transportation support.”

Over the past 14 years of GDQ events, more than $50 million has been raised for charity, so hopefully this event can make a significant contribution to that tally.
