Jorge Martin ‘fucks me’ after late scare in MotoGP race in Japan | MotoGP

Jorge Martin says he was forced to abandon his late MotoGP Grand Prix victory after he momentarily “shit his pants” at Turn 3.

The Pramac driver went from 11th on the grid to second in the first three laps of Sunday’s Grand Prix at Motegi, putting pressure on eventual winner Francesco Bagnaia.

Martin reduced Bagnaia’s lead to under a second in the closing stages of the race and appeared to be quicker than the factory Ducati rider before abandoning his march.

After the race, Martin said a big scare made him ease off at the end to secure 20 points and limit the damage Bagnaia did to his lead.

“When I closed the gap, I definitely thought I could make the move,” he said.

“I saw Pecco was pushing because he made a few mistakes in Turn 11.

“So I said OK, he’s pushing like crazy. So I said, “Okay, let’s push.” And everything was under control.

“I was pretty much at the limit, but under control. But then I lost the front quite badly in turn three.

“I saved it with my elbow. Then I lost about two seconds, I really shit myself and said, “OK, enough.”

“I think in terms of the championship we definitely have to think about those 20 points from 11th place.

“Now it’s important to improve qualifying, to do a good qualifying, because if I’m at the front I can lead and control the race.”

Martin added: “For me it’s not a victory. I am a driver and I want to at least always fight for victory.

“It was difficult to overtake the drivers from behind. I think I had to use a little more tires than Pecco.

“So I started to close the gap, but if you were closer than half a second, the bike became quite difficult.

“It was difficult to stop the bike. And then, with ten laps to go, I said, “Okay, I’ll try again, let’s try it.” I saw that Pecco was having a little trouble braking, so I pushed quite a bit.

“With three minutes left I had this big moment in turn three; That moment told me, “Jorge, OK, it’s time to stop and finish with 20 points.”

“Pecco was really strong, he is a master of tire management so he did a great job.

“But I’m confident to come from the fourth row and finish second. Great confidence for Australia, this is a nice track for me.”
