Last Thursday, Capt. Juan Cruz and I entertained David Goldblum for a day of fishing. We met at Eagle Point Fishing Camp and the conditions weren’t great. I was expecting a northeasterly wind, but not with the speed at which it was blowing. It was a bumpy boat ride across the Houston Ship Channel to a sheltered prey island, where Goldblum caught a few red and black barrels. Once that was done, we took a trip up the ship canal to a sheltered body of water.

While fishing in the small bays to the north we caught a few redfish and a few black drum. Goldblum caught a keeper trout. On the way back to Eagle Point we stopped where we started the day and caught another red and a few more black barrels. We threw back a lot of undersized reds and black drum as well as a few bull reds.

On Friday, Cruz fished three anglers out of Eagle Point and said, “The wind was blowing stronger than Thursday. We headed straight up the Houston Ship Channel and the bite was tough. “With live shrimp and popping corks, these three anglers caught three keeper reds, a few sheepshead and a few black drum.”

captain Bink Grimes from Sunset Lodge in Matagorda reported that trout fishing in eastern Matagorda Bay was good, with Gulps under popping corks. When the wind is east/northeast, eastern Matagorda Bay is difficult to fish, similar to Galveston Bay.

Grimes said, “Luckily for us, the redfish bite has been good in West Matagorda, along with a few isolated black drum. The redfish are biting mullet while the black drum are being caught on shrimp.” Grimes mentioned that the anglers chasing tarpon caught them before the beach got rough.
