Season 2 begins instead Brightonand executive producer Simon Heath recently explained why this particular location was chosen.

He said: “This new episode of Showtrial plays in many ways into the contemporary obsession with culture wars and we felt Brighton provided a very recognizable backdrop to this conflict.”

Meanwhile, executive producer Emma Luffingham added: “We were really clear that we wanted the series to be set on the south coast and Brighton in particular stood out as the city is very focused on the climate agenda.”

“Brighton felt like a natural home for Marcus and his Stop Climate Genocide group, and as a vibrant and politically engaged city, it offered us the perfect place to explore activism and the opposing views on it.”

Although the second season of Showtrial is set in Brighton, it was primarily filmed in Brighton Belfast and other areas of Northern IrelandFilming for the second unit then took place Brighton to give authenticity to the setting of the show.

Explaining the decision to film in Belfast, Heath said: “We have filmed a number of dramas in Northern Ireland over the last decade, including Line of Duty. The great thing is that areas of Northern Ireland lend themselves well to the south coast of England.” These locations were complemented by a second unit filming in and around Brighton itself.”

Meanwhile, director Julia Ford said: “I live in Brighton so I opened the script and read Man on a Bicycle Cycling from Lewes to Brighton and I thought that was great for me. We shot it in Belfast and I thought it would be a real challenge to put these locations together.

“Our location department, production designer Gillian Devenney, producer Ken Horn and I all got on a zoom lens and looked at pictures of locations they had visited in Belfast – I was completely amazed at how many locations resembled certain parts of Brighton. “”

Heath also spoke specifically about filming the climate protest that opens the show in Belfast, explaining how that sequence came about.

During a question and answer session for the series, he said of the sequence: “Well, I have to say, Ken [Horn, producer] must get a lot of credit for this sequence. Ken took over this area of Belfast and it was one of the last things we filmed.

“The hit-and-run was always the opening of the show, and we thought, ‘It’s okay, but you don’t know who he is, so you don’t have those stakes’.”

“So we said, ‘We have to meet him.’ And we were talking about interviews and the ways we could do this inexpensively, and then Ben said, ‘Why don’t we have a huge, huge protest?’ “Oh, brilliant, OK.” So we checked how much money we had left in the bank and said, “We’ll try.”

“But even after we signed off on the scripts and whatever, I had no idea until I saw the rush, the magnitude that Ken was going to create there.”

“And there’s a funny story from that day: we might not have been able to completely control the crowd, and a few passers-by came by and started attacking our climate protesters. ‘The disturbance you cause.’ !’ So it was pretty authentic.

A specific location in Northern Ireland was the former Corpus Christi College in west Belfast, where the court scenes were filmed. This was achieved by the team creating an entire courtroom set in the old school gymnasium.

Showtrial will return on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday October 6th.
