Jail for gun sale robbery in Kansas that left a 16-year-old dead

JOHNSON COUNTY — A Kansas man is headed to prison for the gun sale robbery that left a 16-year-old dead in 2022.

Deon Eugene Austin, 19, was sentenced to life in prison, according to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.

On August 2, a jury convicted Austin of first-degree murder and aggravated assault; According to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office, serious bodily injury occurred in the death of 16-year-old Jammal Blacknoll Jr., who died from gunshot wounds.

Shortly before 9 p.m. On April 10, 2022, Mission, Kansas, police were called to a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Foxridge Drive, according to court records.

First responders determined that 16-year-old Jammaal Blacknoll Jr. had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin also suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment.

According to investigators, a bag of marijuana and a handgun were found at the scene. Witness testimony confirmed that the incident was a gun sale gone bad when Austin attempted to rob Blacknoll. An autopsy confirmed that Blacknoll had been shot 11 times.
