Uber driver raped student in her dorm room: police

Police in Pennsylvania have arrested an Uber driver who allegedly followed a student into her campus dorm and raped her after dropping her home.

Mirvan Dinler, 26, was arrested Friday, Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI reported. According to the broadcaster, the attack is said to have taken place on the night of September 13th.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was reportedly out for a birthday party with friends in Philadelphia that evening. She apparently felt sick during a trip to a nightclub, so she decided to go home. Her friends reportedly waited with her until her Uber arrived to take her back to her dorm.

According to police, the driver of that Uber was Dinler. According to the WPVI report, he allegedly picked her up around 10:19 p.m. and arrived at the university nearly an hour later, at 11:08 p.m.

He then allegedly followed her to her dorm room after she dropped her off there. He is said to have raped her and forced her to perform oral sex, according to police.

Dinler left, but then allegedly came back and demanded the victim give him money for the alleged mess in his car. She allegedly gave him her phone, which Dinler allegedly used to send $150 via Venmo. After that, he finally left, says WPVI.

The student reported the alleged assault to university officials the following week. A Villanova spokesperson reportedly said the driver was banned from Villanova property while the investigation continues.

Court records show Dinler is charged with rape, indecent assault and reckless endangerment. Some of the charges are enhanced because the victim, who had several drinks that night, is considered a “significantly impaired person.”

Uber said in a statement that Dinler is no longer participating in the ride-sharing service.

“Sexual assault is a devastating crime that has no place in our society,” Uber said in a statement, according to CBS News Philadelphia. “We are appalled by what was reported and banned the driver from driving as soon as this was reported to us. We will assist law enforcement as best we can.”

According to court records, Dinler was unable to post bail and is currently being held in the Delaware County Jail. A hearing is scheduled for October 17th.
