PlayStation Plus horror games to scare you for a spooky season

The spooky season is here! October is here and that means the month-long Halloween celebration can begin. What better way to spend the month than by playing some horror gems that will keep you on your toes and either make you scream in terror or hide behind a pillow?

PlayStation Plus offers a range of brilliant games that will give you goosebumps or make you nauseous, sometimes even both. Whether you want to play alone in the dark or with friends, there’s something for you on this list. So turn off the lights, put on your headphones and prepare to be spooked.

Dead space

Dead Space – EA

Science fiction brilliance comes from the Dead space New edition. Brought up to modern standards to make the aliens even more horrific, this film will keep you on the edge of your seat as you sneak through dark corridors. As the lights flicker and your eyes scan the screen for any hint of movement, you’ll know you’re forever two steps away from being overrun. Alternately disgusting and tense, you need extra pants for that.

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 - Capcom

Resident Evil 2 – Capcom

Whether you do it Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 4 At the top of the series, there is no doubt that the second game is still pure brilliance. It had fear, a crazy story, great characters and lots of gnarly beasts to fight. The remake raised the bar even higher and that’s exactly why you should play this game. It brought together all the great features of the franchise and gave it more thrills than the first time around.

The evil within

The Evil Within – Bethesda Softworks

The Evil Within – Bethesda Softworks

I have such a soft spot for it The evil within. I’ve never felt so anxious when playing a game. Made by an excellent studio under the supervision of Bethesda, it is the epitome of survival horror, as every minute feels like you’re clinging on for dear life. Think of the creepiness seen in Silent Hill mixed with the gore and grotesque of the Saw series and you’re on the right track. It may not be full of blockbuster action, but it will leave an indelible impression on you after agonizing hours of horror.

Dead by daylight

Dead By Daylight – Behavior Interactive Inc

Okay, we’ve had a few scary games, how about one that will ease the heart palpitations a bit? However, it really depends on how well you cope under pressure. Dead by daylight is a multiplayer must-play for Halloween. Grab some friends and try to escape crazy killers controlled by other players as they hunt you down. The little mini-games you have to complete seem so simple until a chainsaw-crazed lunatic stomps towards you and your friends scream for you to get going.

The Last of Us Part 1

The Last of Us Part 1 – Sony Interactive Entertainment

The Last of Us Part 1 – Sony Interactive Entertainment

Even if you’ve seen the phenomenal HBO adaptation, The Last of Us is definitely worth your time as the nights draw in. Full of undead gore and heartbreaking drama, this is one of the definitive horror adventures on PlayStation. Telling a very human story amid the cataclysmic events of a world-ending plague, this Naughty Dog game contains so much love, but that doesn’t detract from the terrifying moments of trying to survive and escape when everything falls apart and Clickers are looking for you.

What remains of Edith Finch

What Remains of Edith Finch – Annapurna Interactive

What Remains of Edith Finch – Annapurna Interactive

Haunted is the word that comes to mind What remains of Edith Finch. It’s a delicate but chilling exploration of grief, loss and family secrets. You could easily play this gem in one evening, provided you can get past the emotional beats that will blow you away if you’re not prepared. It’s not an outlandish horror experience, but it’s enough to unnerve you as you explore a vast, quiet mansion and uncover heavy stories and mysteries where darkness takes center stage.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne – Sony Interactive Entertainment

Bloodborne – Sony Interactive Entertainment

You may not categorize immediately Bloodborne as horror, but when you combine Lovecraft, Eldritch gods, gothic landscapes, and enemies that kill you in one hit, I’d say it’s pretty terrible. It has all the hallmarks of a good horror – you wander through a rundown city full of slavering monsters while having no idea what’s going on. The sheer number of creatures trying to devour you or massacre you in the streets is crazy and many of the stories that run through the game are disturbing and eerie. It’s also one of the best games of all time, so play it for that reason too.

FEAR

FEAR – Warner Bros. Games

FEAR – Warner Bros. Games

Say what you want, but we all know that scary little girls with long hair on their faces scare everyone. That’s exactly it FEAR does. While this is a retro gem that may not hold up to modern scrutiny, the game still exudes a wonderful sense of terror. It’s rare that a first-person shooter manages to get under your skin, but FEAR This premise definitely applies. The story is a bit off, but the action is still pretty exciting, and given the scary moments, you’ll have to play with a constant feeling of fear.
