Eustis police are investigating after multiple shots were fired Saturday afternoon

EUSTIS, Fla. – Eustis police are investigating after multiple shots were fired just after noon Saturday while dozens of teenage cheerleaders and soccer players were enjoying their Saturday game day just a few blocks away.

EPD received multiple calls about shots fired beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Callers assumed the shooting occurred in Carver Park and officers rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they determined the shooting had actually occurred on Wall Street between Virginia Avenue and Hollywood Avenue after finding several shell casings and speaking to witnesses, Chief Craig Capri said Inside the lake. Carver Park is located on Bates Avenue and a gate to the rear of the park is located on Virginia Avenue. No one was injured in the shooting, but a bullet pierced a fence and the back window of a home on Virginia Avenue.

EPD crime scene investigators and detectives were on scene and conducted an investigation for more than three hours, Capri said. No suspect information was released, and Capri expressed distaste that anyone would fire shots so close to where children were gathered, calling the suspects “idiots.”

“We have zero tolerance for gun violence in our city,” Capri said.

The shots shocked coaches, parents and children on the Eustis Jr. Panthers field in Carver Park. A Lakeland team coach retrieved a gun from his vehicle to protect his family, he told police, and the sight of the gun sparked an altercation in the park. The officers then went back to the park and stopped the bus. He was interrogated and released. Inside the lake is not releasing the man’s name because he has not been accused of a crime. For safety reasons, EPD canceled the rest of the day’s games, Capri said.

If you have any information about Saturday’s shooting, call EPD at 352-357-4121 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS. Callers to Crimeline can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
