The remains of a missing woman were found in a wooded area in Missouri nearly six months after she disappeared, and authorities are now investigating how and when she died.

Emily Strite, 33, has not been seen since April, when she disappeared from Imperial, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, near De Soto, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. According to the sheriff’s office, officers found Strite in a wooded area in De Soto after receiving a report from the property owner of human skeletal remains found.

Regional Medical Examiner investigators compared medical and dental records and determined the remains belonged to Strite, the sheriff’s office said. Strite’s cause of death is undetermined and investigators are working to determine how her body ended up where it was found, a news release said.

Here’s what you should know about Strite’s disappearance.

Emily Strite’s mother had not spoken to her since April 12th

Charlyn McClain, Strite’s mother, told NBC’s Dateline that she hasn’t spoken to her daughter since April 12. Strite had been driving to a friend’s house in De Soto after traveling across the Missouri border to Cahokia, Illinois, to visit her children at their father’s home, McClain said.

McClain said she became concerned when Strite’s children’s father, Steve Fults, called her about a week later and asked if she had heard from her daughter.

“He never called me and asked me anything about Emily or told me anything about Emily,” McClain said, according to NBC News. “That’s why I panicked when he called me because he’d never done this before.”

McClain filed a missing person report with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office shortly after Fults’ call.

“I’m waiting for answers”

Strite was last seen the morning of April 12, leaving the De Soto area on foot, presumably of her own free will, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post on April 25.

Christi Bauman, who identified herself as Strite’s best friend, told KSDK that it was unusual that Strite hadn’t contacted anyone for days.

“It was not like her to never make contact with anyone, especially her mother, within what would normally be three to five days,” Bauman said, according to KSDK. “And when she hadn’t contacted her mother, she had a gut feeling. I also knew in my gut that something was wrong.”

McClain spoke to KDSK after learning of her daughter’s death.

“I was hopeful, but as a mother, I really knew she wasn’t here, she never called me,” McClain said, according to the St. Louis-based television station. “I wanted her to be found. Now, new.” Questions arise and now I’m waiting for answers.”

“She was smart, funny and larger than life.”

Jessica Strite, sister of Emily Strite, lives in Canada, but her heart and focus are in Jefferson County.

“I want justice for her,” Jessica Strite said, according to KDSK.

Jessica Strite also told the TV station more about her sister, who she says is “coming home.”

“She was smart, funny and larger than life. She was loud, funny, had a huge, bright smile, big mouth and volume to match,” Jessica Strite said. “We will not stop looking for answers, we will not stop looking for the truth and seeking justice for my sister.”
