Hamas claims responsibility for shooting and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv

(NEW YORK) – Hamas has claimed responsibility for the deadly shooting and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, which occurred just as Iran was firing rockets into Israel.

Seven people were killed and 16 injured in the attack, the Israeli police spokesperson unit and Shin Bet said in a joint statement on Wednesday. The two suspected attackers were also killed, police said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Hamas’ military wing claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police said the two suspects began the attack on the city’s light rail system and then continued on foot along Yerushalayim Street in Tel Aviv.

They were killed after being arrested by the city security patrol and armed citizens, police said.

Following the attack, a large police presence patrolled the area looking for further threats.

The shooting occurred shortly before Iran fired a large missile at Israel. According to the Israeli Defense Forces, about 180 rockets were fired at several targets in Israel.

Most of the rockets were intercepted, but “several hits were detected and the damage is currently being assessed,” an Israeli security official said.
