The estate of Anne Rice, the author and legendary New Orleans mystic connoisseur, will host an online auction this month of select items from her collection.

“Elegance of the Eternal: The Collection of Anne Rice” will feature more than 200 objects that provide a glimpse into the life of the New Orleans-born author, considered one of the world’s preeminent authors of supernatural and gothic fiction, including “The Vampire Chronicles, published in 1976.

The online auction from Los Angeles auction house Bonhans Network, Oct. 21-31, will include a portion of Rice’s library of annotated novels, game sets, cutlery and entertainment pieces.

Anne Rice’s heavily annotated and indexed copy of “Gone with the Wind” will be part of the October 21-31 auction.




From her personal collection, books like Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind” will be auctioned off, full of indexes and Rice’s thoughts on the classic Civil War novel. The work is estimated at $300 to $500.

Other well-annotated novels from her collection include Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina ($300-$500) and Mario Puzo’s The Godfather ($400-$600).

The auction will also feature several of her novels, including a first edition of Memnoch the Devil ($300-500) and her first copy of Love and Evil ($700-900).

A Gorhman sterling silver cutlery service for 24 will be part of the Anne Rice auction October 21-31.




Rice was known for her musical salons and entertaining extravaganzas, and the auction will include items from her collection, many of which reflect her otherworldly style.

Her Tiffany & Co. sterling silver flatware sets, including one in the Olympic pattern, are estimated to fetch $8,000 to $12,000.

Other styles include sterling silver flatware sets from Buccellati, Reed & Barton, Wallace and Gorham, including one in the Versailles pattern estimated to be worth $10,000 to $15,000.

A chess-loving writer, the novelist has, over the course of her life, amassed a large collection of antique chess sets with themes that fit her distinctive style, such as a Versailles Chess Set ($800-$1,200), a Knights of the Round Table set ($800-$1,200), etc. Scacchi Medieval set ($400-$600) and Rare Collector’s American Civil War set ($400-$600).

The writer lived in various places around the city, including the former St. Elizabeth’s Orphanage on Napoleon Avenue and a mansion on First Street.

“Those of us who love the writings of Anne Rice often ask ourselves, ‘How did she do that? What was her inspiration?’” said Catherine Williams, vice president and director of beautiful books and manuscripts at Banham in Los Angeles.

“When we look at the books in her library – many of which Rice annotates in detail, as if she were in conversation with the author – or when we look at the beautiful objects in her home, we can make connections between her lived experience and the incredible characters .” and stories she created. And that can be really meaningful to readers.

Rice died in December 2021 at the age of 80. She is buried in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans.
