Attacker stabbed in chaotic scene on Spalding Drive

On Sept. 28, a man was fatally stabbed at the intersection of Spalding Drive and Charleville Boulevard during what the Beverly Hills Police Department described as a “physical altercation.” According to police, the man was stabbed after attacking a father and his baby. Video footage and eyewitness reports show that the father stabbed his attacker in self-defense and that the attacker then attempted to dog-nap him.

In a news release, BHPD said it received a police request about “unknown problems” in the 100 block of Spalding Drive and Wilshire Boulevard at approximately 2:51 p.m. Arriving officers found two men who had suffered injuries as a result of the altercation; The attacker had been stabbed. Police told the Courier that officers used a Taser on the attacker. After an investigation, BHPD concluded that the man who was stabbed confronted the father and his child as they walked on the sidewalk. A man driving by, who identified himself to KCAL only as “Brian,” witnessed the scene. Brian then told NBC4 that the attacker “wasn’t present, he was having some sort of psychotic break, and so it was kind of scary.” Brian stopped his vehicle to help the two who were being attacked, saying his son had intervened. The attacker then focused on her. As he approached Brian’s vehicle, the attacker pounced on it and grabbed his dog in the back seat.

Brian also told NBC4 that he began punching the attacker who tried to take the dog away from his vehicle. Luckily, Brian was able to remove the dog’s collar to free the dog. The attacker then began banging on the windows of a nearby house.

Videos posted on social media captured much of the violent episode. They show a father holding a baby and begging witnesses to call 911. The attacker lunges into the back seat window of a vehicle and grabs a dog by the collar. The people in the vehicle ripped off the dog’s collar and began hitting the attacker to force him out of the car. Another video shows the attacker unresponsive and with cuts on his face and neck as officers provide aid.

The attacker was taken to a local hospital where he later died; His exact cause of death is still under investigation.

According to BHPD, the victim cooperated with the investigation and remained on scene. He was treated for his injuries at the scene and released.

The crime scene was cordoned off for most of the night. Officers searched for evidence and spoke to nearby residents.

Several days later, blood stains were still visible on a grassy area where the attacker was arrested and treated by BHPD. A cross, a candle and flowers were visible on the sidewalk as an apparent memorial.

No further details have yet been provided about the parties involved. BHPD encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
