‘Ndrangheta: Ten arrests in Crotone for criminal association and electoral fraud

This morning, in the province of Crotone, the Carabinieri of the Crotone Provincial Command, supported in the executive phase by those of the Calabria Hunters helicopter squadron, executed a precautionary arrest order issued by the Investigating Judge of the Court of Catanzaro at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office – Anti-Mafia District Directorate of Catanzaro against ten people seriously suspected, to varying degrees, of the crimes of “mafia-like criminal organization”, “mafia political campaign” and “external involvement in mafia association”, “theft is aggravated by the method and purpose of the mafia “. As a precautionary measure, eight of the suspects were given prison sentences and two were given house arrest.

The complex and demanding investigative activity, which was under the direction of the Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Catanzaro District and delegated to the military of the Carabinieri Command of the Province of Crotone, Operations Department – Investigation Unit, spanned a wide period of time and was carried out mainly by technical means Prisoner activities developed and findings related to the development of observation and shadowing activities. The investigative results thus obtained allowed us to determine (at the preliminary investigation phase, which requires a subsequent procedural review in cross-examination with the defense) the seriousness of the circumstantial evidence of the current operation of the Casabona ‘ndrina and to reveal its criminal interests contained therein and the political and entrepreneurial reality of the territory.

In particular, the results of the investigations obtained have allowed us, in view of the seriousness of the evidence, to reconstruct the existence and functioning of a ‘Ndrangheta clan, attributable to members of the “Tallarico” family from Casabona, in contact with leaders and associates of the ‘Ndrangheta Clans of the nearby areas of Rocca di Neto (KR), Petilia Policastro (KR), Cirò, Cirò Marina (KR) and the Papanice district of Crotone, with the aim of maintaining in the jurisdiction the business related to drug trafficking and other criminal activities connected and able to guarantee the economic resources also necessary to feed the “basin” and which serve, among other things, to meet the needs of staff, prisoners and their families. The investigation made it possible to uncover the workings of the association, also to protect the illegal activities of the consortium in view of possible controls by the police, as well as to protect the economic interests of the consortium also through the control and conditioning of auction sales of goods that are are in the area of ​​influence.

In addition, in view of the seriousness of the evidence, it has been reconstructed the close connection between the founder of the consortium and the current mayor of Casabona, who received today’s arrest warrant and, before the election round in October 2021, would have been through the aforementioned ‘ndrangheta clan family and its allies found a large pool of votes that allowed him to achieve the set goal in return for the promise of benefits, including the award of some municipal contracts for construction work and other utilities that are soon to be realized. He allegedly enlisted the assistance of other members of the city administration, including a person who holds the office of a city councilor and is also a recipient of today’s stay-at-home order, to represent the interests of the gang members, in particular both, with regard to the entrepreneurial development activity attributable to the gang itself as well as with regard to the advantages in the unjustified use of public goods and areas intended for industrial settlements as well as with regard to the hiring and carrying out of work activities. In connection with the implementation of the precautionary measures, personal and house searches were carried out.
