Drama in the 91st minute as Harry Maguire saves Manchester United against Porto in the Europa League

Harry Maguire scored in the 91st minute to save Manchester United blushes as they rescued a 3-3 draw in the Europa League at Porto on Thursday, while Chelsea started their Conference League campaign with a home win. Tottenham maintained their 100 percent start in the Europa League away to Ferencvaros, but Serie A side Roma lost 1-0 to Elfsborg in Sweden. Erik ten Hag’s struggling Man United got off to a brilliant start in Porto, with goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund taking a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes.

But Pepe equalized for the hosts in the 27th minute before a brace from Samu Omorodion either side of the break turned the game on its head.

Bruno Fernandes was given the marching orders for a high kick with nine minutes left and United appeared to be heading for a second defeat in a week after losing their captain to another red card.

But Maguire popped up in stoppage time to head in from a corner, giving the Manchester club their second draw in two Europa League games this season and relieving some of the pressure on Ten Hag.

“I’m not judging us at this moment. Judge us at the end of the season,” Ten Hag told TNT Sports.

“We are in. Just wait and see. We have to develop this team further. We will work and keep going. We will fight.”

Chelsea marked their first-ever appearance in the Conference League with a 4-2 win over visiting Belgian club Gent.

Coach Enzo Maresca took advantage of his large squad and called up a completely different starting eleven than the one that played in the league at the weekend.

Renato Veiga gave Chelsea a 12th-minute header, which Pedro Neto doubled a minute after the break.

Tsuyoshi Watanabe made it 2-1 in the 50th minute, but two goals from Christopher Nkunku and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall within seven minutes ended the tie before Omri Gandelman scored a consolation goal.

A 44th-minute penalty from Michael Baidoo was enough to give Elfsborg a surprise 1-0 home win against Roma, who are on one point after two games.

– Johnson on fire –

Tottenham had previously achieved a 2-1 away win against Hungary’s Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

Goals in both halves from Pape Sarr and Brennan Johnson kept Spurs ahead despite a late strike from Barnabas Varga.

“I’m really happy. It’s never easy leaving home in Europe,” Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou told TNT Sports.

“You could see the atmosphere tonight, there was a lot to do and with four teenagers (on the team) too.”

An inexperienced Spurs side got off to a slow start and Ferencvaros thought they had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Varga, but VAR ruled there had been an offside call beforehand.

The Premier League club broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Sarr was the only player in the Ferencvaros penalty area who kept his cool.

The home team failed three times to clear the danger, allowing Sarr to strike from the six-yard box and shoot the ball into the goal.

As Ferencvaros began to threaten late, Johnson scored his fifth goal in as many games with a left-footed shot that hit the post on its way into the net in the 86th minute.

And Spurs needed the two-goal lead when Varga scored in the 90th minute to set up a nervy finale.

Anderlecht came from behind to win 2-1 at La Liga’s Real Sociedad, Lazio beat Nice 4-1 in the rain in Rome and Ajax earned a 1-1 draw at Slavia Prague.

Latvia’s RFS came from behind to draw 2-2 at home against Galatasaray and Lyon celebrated a 4-1 win at Rangers.

In the Conference League, Cercle Brugge celebrated a 6-2 home win against Swiss club St. Gallen, while Legia Warsaw surprised Real Betis 1-0 in the Polish capital.

Larne became the first Northern Irish team to take part in real UEFA competition, but suffered a 3-0 defeat to Molde in Norway.

The New Saints of Wales also made their league stage debut in European competition against two-time Conference League runners-up Fiorentina, where the hosts needed two second-half goals to emerge 2-0 winners.
