The supervisor of the Daly City gym followed him home and was shot by a member who broke the rules: DA

A 60-year-old supervisor at a Daly City gym was shot to death near his home by a gunman who repeatedly violated gym etiquette, authorities said Thursday.

“The confrontation here was about the cleanliness of the gym,” said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Investigators say the fatal shooting over the weekend stemmed from an argument over the suspect’s ongoing behavioral problems at the Fitness 19 gym in the Westlake Shopping Center.

The victim was Rolando Yanga, a grandfather and father of four.

His wife of 24 years told KTVU he was a loving husband and hard worker who always gave.

Wagstaffe said the victim told suspect Maarij Afridi, 21, that he had not followed the rules at the gym.

“Walking around barefoot, not caring about cleaning things, putting things in the toilet that didn’t belong there – and the victim pointed it out to him,” Wagstaffe said.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday, Yanga left the gym in his Nissan Frontier pickup and drove to South Mayfair Avenue, where he lives. According to authorities, he was chased by the suspect, who was being driven by his mother.

On surveillance video, the victim can be seen driving past, closely followed by a second car.

A few moments later there are shots fired.

“It’s an execution-style killing,” Wagstaffe said. He said the suspect fired about eight shots from a 10mm handgun.

“Get within 15 feet of him and open fire on him, hitting the victim, the victim goes down. And then the suspect walks up to him and fires a few additional shots at him at close range,” Wagstaffe said.

The suspect was charged with murder and the special circumstance of lying in wait, meaning he would face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.

His mother, Zaib Un Nisa Afridi, 50, was charged with aiding and abetting.

Neighbors are shocked by the violence.

“This is crazy. You can’t take someone’s life. He has a very good life,” Jane Kwan said.

Her daughter Janet Anolik agreed, saying, “It’s just senseless that this is happening and it’s just a terrible crime that someone can just kill someone over a fight at the gym.”

Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo knows the victim’s wife.

“This is a rare occurrence here in Daly City. And this tragedy makes us deeply saddened because nothing like this happens in our community,” Manalo said.
