GSU expert warns of text and robocall fraud ahead of 2024 election – WABE

Data suggests Americans received 15 billion political text messages in 2022. More are expected in this year’s presidential election, but not all of them are legitimate.

Arun Rai, an economics professor at Georgia State University and a member of the AI Advisory Council of Georgia, says more and more people are finding ways to scam people. He himself was targeted by scammers using misinformation.

On Thursday’s edition of Closer Look, Rai spoke with host Rose Scott about the dangers and risks of political misinformation and how it can spread through various channels, including text messages, emails and robocalls.

Stressing the importance of raising awareness, Rai said people should be on the lookout for messages coming from a number not in their contact list that contain typos and emergency requests. He said voters should never click on a suspicious link, especially if it asks for money. Spam messages should also be reported to wireless carriers and the FCC.
