Chicago crime: Indya Smith faces charges for allegedly shooting man on CTA Red Line train in Uptown, CPD says

CHICAGO (WLS) – A 23-year-old Chicago woman was charged Wednesday in connection with a shooting on a CTA Red Line train on Chicago’s North Side.

Indya Smith was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a firearm owner’s identification card and possession of a weapon in the CTA.

Smith was arrested just after 9 a.m. Wednesday by Loyola University and Chicago police officers in the 5800 block of North Broadway in Edgewater, CPD said.

She was identified as the suspect who about 25 minutes earlier got into a verbal altercation with a 33-year-old man in the 5000 block of North Broadway in Uptown, pulled out a gun and shot him in the shoulder, police said.

At last check, the victim was taken to hospital and was believed to be fine.

The shooting disrupted some CTA Red Line service during the morning rush hour on Wednesday.

Smith is next due in court on Friday.

The CTA originally said the incident occurred on a train departing from Argyle station.
