18-year-old arrested after fire destroys playground in Peoria

PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — An 18-year-old is in custody after a Peoria playground was set on fire last month, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

According to authorities, Peoria firefighters and police officers were called to Roundtree Ranch Park near 83rd Avenue and Olive Avenue just before 4 p.m. on Sept. 24. Officers began speaking to witnesses and learned that the suspect, identified as Jah’yeir Salaam, had reportedly started a fire near the playground.

Salaam was located and taken into custody on charges of arson, criminal damage and reckless arson. Estimated damage is estimated at approximately $125,000 to $150,000.

No injuries were reported from the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
