12-year-old girl critically injured in Salt Lake City crash dies in hospital

A 12-year-old girl who was critically injured in a five-vehicle crash in Salt Lake City has died.

A Salt Lake City Police official said the investigation began around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when units were dispatched to a crash in the Ballpark District at 280 West and 1700 South.

According to reports, five cars were at a traffic light when an SUV failed to yield and crashed into the rear of one of the other vehicles, setting off a chain reaction.

Authorities initially reported that one person was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

On Thursday, October 3, police provided an update on the accident investigation and stated that the seriously injured victim was a 12-year-old girl. She reportedly succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

“Salt Lake City Police only learned of her death this week and had to take appropriate steps to confirm the information,” officials said.

This accident marks the ninth traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City in 2024.
