A Houston Police Department officer was arrested Tuesday for alleged assault, just weeks after he joined the force, according to police.

Jonathan Torres, 24, was charged with assault on a family member and unlawful restraint, according to an HPD social media post. Torres was sworn in as an officer in August.

According to court documents, Torres is accused of putting a laptop into a family member’s hand and restraining the person. The victim is said to have suffered visible injuries and the laptop was damaged. According to court documents, he also pinned the victim down, handcuffed her and threatened her with a taser when she tried to leave the apartment.

Assault on a family member and unlawful oppression are both Class A misdemeanors, punishable by up to one year in prison and a maximum fine of $4,000.

HPD said Torres has been relieved of duty pending further investigation by the Internal Affairs Division.
