Chase contestants praised for taking Anne Hegerty’s bait despite tragic results | Television & Radio | Showbiz and television

Fans of The Chase have praised two “courageous” contenders who were persuaded to play for Chaser Anne Hegerty’s highest offer. The pair, who hailed from London and Gainsborough, battled each other but unfortunately couldn’t beat The Governess.

During the repeat of The Chase on Thursday (October 3), ITV presenter Bradley Walsh was on hand again to guide a quartet of contestants through three rounds. After a spectacular performance in the first Cash Builder, contestant Sav took a risk and accepted 66-year-old Anne’s higher offer of £50,000.

Despite answering questions about Marvel superheroes and more correctly, he ultimately failed to defeat the Chaser and was sent off the field. Megan followed in his footsteps and also chose the quizzer’s highest offer.

Like Sav before her, she didn’t make it home and lost her £85,000. However, fans took to social media to praise the couple for their bravery.

A second user said: “Fair play to Sav and Megan for trying out the heights. Can leave #thechase with my head held high.”

Someone else echoed: “Well, tough luck, Megan. Kudos for trying it. Respect!”

“Wow I’m buying the £85 #TheChase,” wrote a fourth.

Following Sav and Megan’s departure, it was the turn of self-confessed Smiths superfans Jenny and Liverpudlian Steve.

The duo weren’t as brave as their eliminated team members, but managed to add a whopping £7,000 to the prize money.

Unfortunately, during the final chase, they were caught by Anne within 44 seconds and therefore had to leave the show empty-handed.

Earlier this year, Anne, who has served as quiz host on The Chase since 2010, spoke about what impact upcoming budget cuts could have on the show.

It is understood bosses have reportedly been forced to reduce the number of episodes filmed in 2025 for financial reasons, with Anne confirming she will be filming “fewer shows”.

“All streaming services now show advertising,” she explained. “So channels like ITV have to compete for advertising money.

“That means less money is made from advertising. We are still at the end of a pandemic that has shut down the economy for two years. There’s less money.”

“It’s like that all over the world,” she confessed to the Daily Star. “Every aspect of the media is feeling the pinch right now,” she said of the strain being felt around the world.

Tune in to The Chase every weekday at 5pm on ITV and ITVX.
