Leandro Dominguez convicted in Dunn Avenue shooting

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – At a recent court hearing, 18-year-old Leandro Dominguez was sentenced for his involvement in a fatal altercation earlier this year.

Dominguez pleaded guilty June 24 in District Court to one count of aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of aggravated assault causing serious injury. On September 30, he was sentenced to five to seven years in prison on each count, with the sentences running concurrently.

The court also recommended Dominguez for the juvenile offender program, which, if successfully completed, could result in his remaining sentence being suspended and replaced with probation.

The charges against Dominguez stem from a violent altercation on Dunn Avenue on Feb. 15. According to court documents, the altercation began when 22-year-old Mauricio Dominguez Jr. and his younger brother Leandro approached 24-year-old James Gulley, who was parked near East 2nd Avenue and Dunn Avenue. The situation escalated when Mauricio brandished a pipe wrench, prompting Gulley to open fire, fatally wounding Mauricio.

After his brother’s death, Leandro returned to his apartment to retrieve a firearm and returned to the crime scene, where he engaged in a shootout with Gulley. Both Dominguez and Gulley suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the exchange and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Although there were several bystanders in the area, no other injuries were reported.

At his first court appearance on February 20, Leandro Dominguez was held on $100,000 bond. As part of the agreement reached in June, the state agreed to dismiss one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault and battery with a weapon at sentencing. Both the defense and prosecution were free to argue for their desired sentences.
