Rishi Nagar, news director for Red FM Calgary radio station, was attacked in the Alberta city on Sunday.

Nagar told Hindustan Times: “The pro-Khalistan people attacked me.”

He said the attack followed a report of an incident at the Gurdwara Dashmesh Cultural Center in Calgary that resulted in two Indo-Canadians being arrested on firearms charges.

On Wednesday, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre said in a post on X that he was “appalled by this violent attack” on Nagar. “I’m glad to hear he’s on the road to recovery. Freedom must triumph over fear. Bring safe streets home. I encourage anyone with information about this attack to contact local police,” he added.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also reported on the incident, saying: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the recent attack on Rishi Nagar, a respected journalist and news director at RedFM.” In Alberta, we value press freedom and the Safety of all citizens. Violence and intimidation against anyone, especially those who work tirelessly to inform the public, have no place in our society.”

“My thoughts are with Rishi, his family and his colleagues at this difficult time and I wish him a full and speedy recovery. Let us continue to stand together against violence and uphold the values of respect and safety for all,” she added.

Calgary Conservative MP Shuvaloy Majumdar said he was “shocked” to hear about the attack. “This type of violence has increased under (Prime Minister) Justin Trudeau and (New Democratic Party leader) Jagmeet Singh,” he added.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Nagar said: “I want to make one thing very clear: I will not be silenced.”

Calgary police are investigating the attack and are looking for two suspects who were caught on video surveillance attacking Nagar. The attack appears to follow a report by RedFM about the arrest of two people at the gurdwara. Gursewak Singh and Sukhpreet Singh were arrested on firearms charges.
