How Michael Schumacher manages to communicate after a skiing accident that almost killed him

The way racing legend Michael Schumacher communicates after his near-fatal skiing accident has been revealed.

When talking about legends in Formula 1, Schumacher has to be in the conversation as he has won the most Drivers’ World Championships at the age of seven, equaled only by Lewis Hamilton.

He is best known for his time at Ferrari and also holds the record for most consecutive title wins with five consecutive title wins from 2000 to 2004 – the German was a true pioneer in the sport.

After retiring in 2006 before returning in 2010 and calling it quits in 2012, Schumacher suffered a horrific injury just a year after ending his career.

During a ski holiday with his family in 2013, Schumacher was heading down the French Alps with his then 14-year-old son Mick when the retired racing driver skied over an off-piste area of the piste.

He then fell and hit his head on a boulder hidden from view by the falling snow, which would have been fatal if he had not been wearing a helmet.

The then 44-year-old still suffered serious head injuries and was flown to hospital, where he fell into a medically induced coma due to his traumatic brain injury and did not go home until nine months after the accident.

Since that incident, the former F1 champion has completely disappeared from the public eye, while a statement released the following year told fans that he was no longer in a coma and was instead “undergoing a long period of rehabilitation.” Little is known about his condition 11 years later.

His family has kept details of his health private as updates have been few.

Schumacher’s agent Sabine Kehm said the family was “forced” to deny reports that the German could move again and released a statement saying those claims were “not true,” adding: “Such speculation are irresponsible given the seriousness of their matter.” When injured, his privacy is very important.

“Unfortunately, they also raise false hopes for many of those involved.”

Former Formula 1 Benetton team boss Flavio Briatore’s ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, previously revealed how the ex-racing driver communicates without speaking: “Michael doesn’t speak, he communicates with his eyes,

“Only three people can visit him and I know who they are.

“They moved to Spain and his wife set up a hospital in this house.”

In 2020, it was reported that Schumacher had been relocated from his family’s former Swiss homeland to the southwest of Mallorca.

Speaking to L’Equipe, former Ferrari boss Jean Todt explained that the seven-time world champion is “wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him”, adding: “His life is different now and I have the privilege “To share moments” with him. That’s all there is to say.

In a 2021 Netflix documentary about his life, his son Mick said: “I think dad and I, we would understand each other in a different way now.”
