IMT suspends exams due to tragic death of a student on campus

Authorities at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, have confirmed the tragic death of Chiamaka Ozoigbondu, a student of Peaceland College, Enugu, on Monday in a road accident on campus.

They confirmed the incident in a statement by the institute’s acting rector, Dr. Emeka Ejim, and made it available to journalists in Enugu on Wednesday.

Ejim also stated that the other two students who were injured in the accident are currently receiving medical attention.

According to him, the institute sympathizes with the family of the deceased and expresses its heartfelt condolences to those affected on the sad demise of the promising young girl.

“We pray that such an incident does not happen again,” he added.

He further explained that after a joint emergency meeting of the management and academic body on Wednesday, the school decided to immediately suspend all pending examinations.

“A three-day mourning period, from October 2nd to 3rd, will be observed by staff and students to put the soul of Ozoigbondu to rest and prevent recurrence of such a sad incident.”

“The IMT management will work with the security agencies and the bereaved family to ensure that justice is served and seen in this matter.

“All forms of celebration on campus after exams are hereby prohibited.

“Students who want to celebrate after their exams can do so outside the IMT premises,” he added.

Ejim also stated that students who partied within the institute “face expulsion and no amount of pressure would make the IMT lift it.”

He explained that the speed limit for all vehicles on campus cannot exceed 20 km/h and any driver found violating the rule must be arrested and handed over to law enforcement.

“Law enforcement officers should not accompany students to IMT for any reason.

“Their presence makes it impossible for IMT security guards to control these students.

Classes are held under strict supervision, with all participating students wearing their department uniforms and ID cards.

“All students must sign a code of conduct to ensure good behavior.

“The use of ‘pass’ at the gate should be enforced in the future,” he added.
