Iran wants peace, says President Pezeshkian after attack on Israel

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed that Iran wants peace in the Middle East at a joint press conference in Doha with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Wednesday.

“Iran strives for peace and stability in the Middle East because no country can make progress when there is war,” he said.

These statements follow Iran’s attack on Israel on Tuesday, in which more than 180 ballistic missiles were fired into the country, marking Iran’s largest attack on Israel to date.

“We, the Iranians, do not want to be the cause of instability in the Middle East, as the consequences will be irreversible. “Iran doesn’t want war,” Pezeshkian said in a speech the week before. “We want to live in peace. There are no winners in war and we know it!”

Since last Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been at a highly secure location in Iran as the country prepares for further retaliation from Israel following the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah.

The Iranian attack was widely condemned by the international community, particularly the United States.

US reaction to Iran

“Israel is not only considering its response to the Iranian attack, but we are also weighing our options,” said US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. “A response that sends a message to Iran is necessary and discussions about this are ongoing,” he continued.

“I think we are clear that, as important as a response should be, there is a recognition that the region is really on a knife edge and we have real concerns about a more widespread or sustained escalation, not just that “It’s a kind of isolated salvo, but a more sustained hostility that could endanger not only Israel but also our strategic interests,” Campbell added.

President Joe Biden announced sanctions against Iran in retaliation for the attack. He also expressed support for Israel, stating that the US “will provide advice to Israel” and that “Israel has the right to defend itself.”
