Three killed by unknown assailants in tragic shooting in Lisbon

In a rare act of violence in Lisbon, three people were shot dead by unknown assailants in broad daylight on Wednesday. The victims, two men and a woman, were attacked in the working-class neighborhood of Penha de França. Local authorities reported that the suspects, three men, fled the scene on foot and the motive remained unclear.

“I can confirm that three people were shot and the suspects, three men, fled,” a police source said, adding that it was too early to say the motive for the killings. Several local media outlets said two of the victims died from head injuries, suggesting an execution-like blow.

While Portugal is considered one of the safest countries in the world and is the seventh most peaceful country in the world according to the Global Peace Index,
Violent crime has increased. Last year, violent crime in the country increased by 5.6% to 14,022 cases compared to 2022, with over a third of the incidents occurring in the Lisbon area.
