A doctor was shot dead in the early hours of the morning at a nursing home in southeast Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj district, police said on Thursday (October 3, 2024).

The accused, who appeared to be youths, came for treatment and shot dead Javed Akhtar, a Unani practitioner (BUMS), around 1.45 a.m., they said.

According to a police officer, Mr. Akhtar was found on a chair with blood oozing from his head.

An investigation revealed that two boys, aged around 16, who had come to the three-bed Nima Hospital around 1 a.m. to get dressed may have been involved, the official said.

One of them had a bandaged toe and was also found to have been in the hospital the day before, the official said.

After getting dressed, the two boys went to Mr. Akhtar’s cabin.

Some time later, night nurses Gajala Parveen and Mohammad Kamil heard a shot. Parveen rushed to the hut and found Akhtar sitting motionless in a pool of blood.

At first glance, it appeared to be a targeted killing, although it was unprovoked and involved reconnaissance work, the official said.

Police are analyzing footage from CCTV cameras installed in the establishment’s reception, changing room and gallery.
