2 correctional officers are recovering in prison after a knife attack

GREENSVILLE, Va. (WWBT) – Two correctional officers are recovering after being stabbed by an inmate at Greensville Correctional Center.

On Tuesday, October 1, shortly after 2:30 p.m., 26-year-old inmate Axel Wilfredo Ortiz Garcia allegedly attacked the officers.

DOC officials say Ortiz Garcia is a confirmed associate of the MS-13 gang. He was also charged with the April attack on a correctional officer at Sussex I State Prison and the killing of their assigned K-9, Rivan.

Ortiz Garcia was jailed following a 2018 conviction on charges of aggravated assault with intent and using a firearm to commit a felony.

He was temporarily held at the Greensville Correctional Center under a Sussex County Circuit Court order in connection with the April attack.

VADOC continues to investigate.
