A Springfield man was shot and killed in St. Louis after stabbing a puppy

A Springfield man was shot and killed after police said he stabbed a puppy and then stabbed himself with scissors in a St. Louis office building.

The man was identified as Gregory Maxwell, 37.

According to St. Louis police, the incident occurred in the 5700 block of Oakland Avenue, near the former site of the St. Louis Arena in the Cheltenham neighborhood.

When officers arrived, the man pulled out a pair of scissors and refused to put the scissors down. He then tried to stab his dog.

The police used a stun gun, but it had no effect.

The 37-year-old man fled from officers after the unsuccessful Taser attempt and began breaking into locked office doors in a narrow hallway while officers followed him, still ordering him to put the scissors away.

According to police, at some point the man began stabbing himself with scissors. He then ducked into a doorway, where he remained partially hidden from officers, and apparently stabbed the dog.

An officer fired his weapon at the man. Emergency services responded and took the man to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The injured dog was taken to the Humane Society for treatment, where he survived.

No officers were injured in the incident.
