Mets and Braves split in doubleheader and reach MLB playoffs, missing DBacks

Only one game mattered to decide the final playoff spot in the MLB National League playoffs.

And the result was not in favor of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After the New York Mets won Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, Arizona needed the Mets to also win Game 2 to make the playoffs.

It didn’t happen.

Atlanta earned a 3-0 victory to clinch the final spot in the MLB playoffs, eliminating Arizona from the postseason.

Why did the Mets and Braves play a doubleheader on Monday?

New York and Atlanta played a doubleheader game as a follow-up to games postponed last week due to inclement weather. The games had to be played because the teams, along with the Diamondbacks, were still fighting for a playoff spot.

The Mets earned an 8-7 victory in the first game of the doubleheader to secure a spot in the playoffs.

The Braves secured a spot in the postseason with their 3-0 win in the second game.

Both games were broadcast nationally on ESPN2. They also appeared in Atlanta on Bally Sports South and in New York on SNY.

The win sends Atlanta into the postseason as the No. 2 wild-card team in the National League, as both New York and Atlanta finished 89-73, but Atlanta won the regular season to earn a tiebreaker over the Mets.

The Mets are the No. 3 wild-card team in the NL.

Arizona, which finished with the same record as the Braves and Mets, missed the postseason because it lost tiebreakers to Atlanta and New York, both of which won their regular-season series against the DBacks.

If the Mets had won both games against the Braves on Monday and won the doubleheader, the Diamondbacks would have made the postseason as the No. 3 wild-card spot, with the Mets taking the No. 2 wild-card spot. Atlanta would have missed the postseason.

That would have put New York at 90-72, Arizona at 89-73 and Atlanta at 88-74.
