Coco Gauff of the USA, bidding for her first semi-final appearance since the French Open, should be prepared for a tough match against an upset Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine in the women’s singles quarterfinals at the 2024 China Open. Gauff made it to the quarterfinals after Naomi Osaka withdrew with an apparent back injury. After losing the first set 3-6, Gauff responded by winning the next set 6-4, forcing a decider. Before they could even begin the third set, Osaka informed the referee that she had decided to forfeit the match, giving Gauff the win and a ticket to the last eight. Meanwhile, Yuliia Starodubtseva had to play a series of games leading up to this point in the tournament. The world-ranked 115th Ukrainian qualifier has now won her last six matches, including an exquisite straight-sets win over Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 6-0 in Round 4.
