Mumbai Businessman Jumps Off Atal Setu In Tragic Incident; Days after the banker’s suicide

A 52-year-old businessman committed suicide by jumping from the Atal Setu in Mumbai on Wednesday. This is the second such suicide incident in two days. The incident took place around 9am when the man allegedly jumped from the pier and ended his life. According to the information, local police along with a team of firefighters and officials from other concerned departments rushed to the spot and fished out the body from the sea. A senior police official said the body was kept at a hospital mortuary for post-mortem and a legal case was initiated.

Mumbai Police have identified the deceased as Philip Hitesh Shah, a resident of Matunga. During investigation, it was found that the man used to live in Mumbai with his family. He has been depressed for the past few months. Police are trying to find out the reason behind this extreme step.

According to police, information about the suicide was received around 9 a.m. following which local police rushed to the spot. With the help of a deep diving team and firefighters, the body of the deceased was recovered from the sea and taken to a hospital. At the hospital, doctors declared him dead.

Police said that no suicide note was recovered from the deceased. The deceased’s wife stated that he was mentally disturbed and depressed and was therefore undergoing treatment. “He left his house around 8 am after claiming that he was attending a function and would be back in some time,” the senior inspector was quoted as saying.

A report of an accidental death has been reported and the matter remains under investigation. Two days ago, a 40-year-old banker jumped from the Atal Setu and was later found washed up on the coast of Navi Mumbai on Tuesday (October 1). Sushant Chakravarti was an assistant manager of a nationalized bank and he parked his SUV on the bridge at Sewri and jumped into the sea. Chakravarti’s wife said he works at the bank’s Fort branch in south Mumbai and is under immense work pressure.

There have been several suicides and suicide attempts on the Atal Setu. The ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu’, also known as the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), connecting South Mumbai with the satellite city of Navi Mumbai, was inaugurated in January. The six-lane bridge is 21.8 km long and has a 16.5 km long sea connection.
