The piece runs in changing repertoire with “POTUS: Or behind every great fool there are seven women who try to keep him alive” by Selina Fillinger.

“This season at Trinity Rep has been all about sharing women’s stories,” said Curt Columbus, artistic director of The Laura H. Harris, in a statement. “I’m delighted to introduce Kate Hamill’s dazzling, female-directed adaptation of Sherlock Holmes to our audiences.”

“This magnificent version, written by one of America’s most produced playwrights and directed by our great friend Laura Kepley, perfectly complements our production of POTUS this fall,” he added.

The play – which has been described as “The Hound of the Baskervilles meets Thelma and Louise” – is a contemporary retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary crime novels.

“Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – APT 2B” premiered at the Kansas City Repertory Theater in January 2022.

Hamill, a New York City-based playwright and actress, is best known for her feminist adaptations of classic novels such as “Sense & Sensibility,” “Little Women” and “Vanity Fair.”

Her version of “Pride & Prejudice” was performed at Trinity Rep in 2018. For seven consecutive years she was among the ten most produced playwrights in the United States.

Director Laura Kepley was a member of the first Brown/Trinity Rep MFA program directing class to graduate. After graduating, she served as Trinity Rep’s artistic associate for five years, directing Trinity Rep productions of “Boots on the Ground,” “The Clean House,” “Some Things Are Private,” “Shapeshifter” and “Syringa Tree.”

She was named associate artistic director of the Cleveland Play House in 2010 and artistic director in 2013, a position she held for nearly a decade.

“This adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories presents the mysteries and characters we love from the classic series in a new light,” she said. “The raucous production is a mix of the Victorian era and contemporary, exploring how we survive and thrive in this ever-changing post-pandemic world.”

The production’s creative team includes set designer Collette Pollard, costume designer Shahrzad Mazaheri, lighting designer Dawn Chiang, sound designer Sartje Pickett, fight coordinator Mark Rose, dialect coach Cherie Corrine Rice and dramaturge Evie Dumont.

The cast includes new guest artists Renata Eastlick (Ms. Sherlock Holmes) and Madeleine Maby (Dr. Joan Watson), resident company member Angela Brazil (Irene Adler, Mrs. Hudson and others), and returning guest artist Jeff Church (Inspector Lestrade). , Elliot Monk and others).
