Inmate who stabbed Virginia correctional officers previously killed a K9

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. – Two Greensville Correctional Center officers have been released from the hospital after they were stabbed by an inmate on Tuesday, sources told CBS 6 investigative reporter Laura French. Those sources told French that the inmate allegedly involved in the recent stabbing is the same person suspected in the killing of K9 officer Rivan in April.

According to the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Belgian Malinois was killed as part of his duty to “heroically” protect his assigned correctional officer, staff and other inmates at Sussex I State Prison.

According to French sources, one of the victims of the recent knife attack was a trainee officer.

The sources added that an officer in training would not normally be allowed to transfer inmates.

The VDOC says this is an active investigation.
