Man impaled in log truck accident on NC 87

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man was impaled by a log in a traffic accident on NC 87 near International Paper on Wednesday.

According to the Acmee Delco Riegelwood Fire Department, a log truck entering the paper mill was struck from behind by a box truck from Fayetteville. A 3-inch diameter log then impaled the truck driver and pierced his left abdomen.

Recovery teams had to cut the tree trunk with a chainsaw, cut off the roof and peel it away so the pit could be removed. The driver was taken to hospital where he is in serious condition.
