Stabbing injures 1 on Eastbank Esplanade in Portland

A fight between at least two people on Portland’s Eastbank Esplanade led to a stabbing Wednesday morning, police said.

A witness who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive said the stabbing occurred as a church group was handing out free food on the Esplanade under Interstate 5.

Sergeant. Kevin Allen, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, said all suspects fled the scene before police arrived and that officers made no immediate arrests.

An ambulance took the male victim to a hospital where he underwent surgery, according to police. Police also said they believe the injuries are not life-threatening.

Allen said the investigation is ongoing.

The area around the Esplanade has been hit by further violence in recent months. In March, two people died in homicides along Portland’s waterfront. Another man was killed in a shooting under the Hawthorne Bridge in December.
