The USA remembers the victims and heroes of September 11th 23 years after the tragic day

The United States remembers the victims and heroes of September 11, 23 years after nearly 3,000 people died in terrorist attacks on the country on September 11, 2001.

Ceremonies were held at the tragic sites of the attacks, including New York City, the Pentagon and the site of a plane crash in Pennsylvania.

Family members read the names of lost loved ones at a memorial ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, site of the World Trade Center towers.

Right after a presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump put politics aside and shook hands at the ceremony. Among them were President Joe Biden, vice presidential candidate JD Vance and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

President Biden, Harris and Trump also attended wreath-laying ceremonies in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to honor the 40 aircraft passengers and crew members who died in the Flight 93 crash.

The passengers are widely considered heroes for fending off the terrorists and stopping them from flying the plane into the U.S. Capitol.

Six minutes of silence were observed during the ceremonies, recognizing when each of the Twin Towers was hit and collapsed, when the attack on the Pentagon occurred and when Flight 93 crashed.

The tragic events of September 11th were the worst terrorist attacks in history on American soil.

Of the 2,753 people who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks, approximately 40%, or 1,103 victims, are still unknown.
