The Broadway lights are being dimmed for the late actor Adrian Bailey

Broadway will honor the late actor Adrian Bailey, who died Sept. 22 at age 67 following a fall at home, by dimming the marquee lights of an all-owner theater on Oct. 17.

“Over the years, Mr. Bailey has served as an inspiration, not only through his talented performances on the Broadway and touring Broadway stages, but also through his perseverance, positive attitude and indomitable spirit,” said Jason Laks, interim president of The Broadway League. “The love of our community is a testament to this spirit. With the loss of Adrian Bailey, we have truly lost a shining light both on and off Broadway, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, former colleagues and everyone who loved him most.”

Bailey appeared in 15 Broadway productions, including his heralded debut in 1976 Your arms are too short to box with Godbefore a tragic stage accident in 2008 ended his career as a musician. Appears in The Little Mermaid As a member of the ensemble, Bailey entered the open trapdoor of a prop boat hanging over the stage of the Lunt-Fontanne Theater and fell more than 30 feet just before a matinee, breaking numerous bones in his body.

In a statement to Backstage magazine in 2008, when he filed lawsuits against Disney and other companies associated with the production, Bailey said, “My life has changed forever.” It will never be the same. My immediate goal is to somehow be able to go into my own apartment and take care of myself. I try to stay positive. I look forward to one day recovering and being fully compensated for my injuries.”

Although Bailey was eventually able to walk again, his mobility remained impaired. The outcome of the lawsuits is uncertain.

According to the Broadway League, after the accident, Bailey continued to “inspire friends and colleagues in the Broadway community and beyond, using social media to share his remarkable spirit with his colleagues through updates, insights and songs.”
