Mumbai: Police investigation against a Hit and run case Goregaon (East), in which a 13-year-old student on a two-wheeler died after being hit by a dump truck, show that the driver of the dump truck did not have a driver’s license. The owner of the vehicle, Vishnu Giram, has now also been arrested.
The hit-and-run occurred early Tuesday. Vinmai More, the deceased, was on her way to school with her father Ramesh at 6.30 am. She sat as a pillion passenger on her father’s two-wheeler. They had reached General AK Vaidya Marg near Gokuldham when a tipper truck hit their two-wheeler.
According to the police, the two-wheeler moved to the left of the dump truck and both turned left at about the same time. The impact threw Vinmai backwards. The front wheel of the dump truck smashed her head.
Ramesh held a bloodied Vinmai in his arms as passers-by gathered. One of them called the police. Police officials took Vinmai and Ramesh to the Trauma Care Hospital where the girl was declared brought dead. Ramesh suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs. His helmet saved him, the police said. Witnesses clicked pictures of the dumper and posted them on social media.
The driver, Prashant Gupta, abandoned the dump truck and fled. Using the license plate number of the dump truck, the police were able to locate the vehicle owner (Giram). They then tracked down Gupta and arrested him.
“Gupta worked as a helper on heavy vehicles. Since he had no contract with him, Giram asked him to drive the vehicle. Gupta didn’t have a driving licence,” an official said.
Vinmai’s parents were unable to speak to the media.
