CHICAGO (CBS) – The deadline for Illinois voters is fast approaching Register to vote in the 2024 presidential election will be done by mail or online, but voters can still register in person if they vote early or cast their ballot on Election Day.

To register to vote in Illinois, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a citizen of the United States.
  • You must be at least 17 years old on or before the date of the primary election and turn 18 years old on or before the date of the general or consolidated election (16-year-olds may register to vote in advance).
  • You must live in your voting district at least 30 days before Election Day.
  • You are not allowed to serve a prison sentence in a penal institution as a result of a conviction.
  • You cannot exercise the right to vote anywhere else.

Here are some important deadlines to keep in mind for the Nov. 5 general election.

When is the last day to register to vote by mail in Illinois?

To register to vote by mail, your application must be postmarked by October 8th. You must send it to your local elections office.

You can print an application from the Illinois State Board of Elections. You will also find information about where to send your application depending on where you live.

When is the last day to register to vote online in Illinois?

If you do not register by mail by the October 8th deadline, you can still register to vote online until October 20th at 11:59 p.m. The Illinois State Board of Elections has an online registration tool.

You must provide your Illinois driver’s license or state identification card number, the date the driver’s license or ID card was issued, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your date of birth.

Even if you miss the online registration deadline, you can still register in person at any early voting location or at your local polling place on Election Day. When registering in person, two pieces of ID are required, at least one of which shows your current residential address.

When is the last day to mail in or drop off your mail-in ballot in Illinois?

If you vote by mail, you have until Election Day (November 5) to drop off your ballot by mail or at an official ballot drop box. All mail-in ballots postmarked before or on Election Day will be counted as long as they arrive within two weeks of Election Day.

When is the last day to vote early in Illinois?

Early voting will continue through Nov. 4, the day before Election Day.

In Chicago, early voting began on October 3 at two downtown locations (the city’s polling place at 191 N. Clark St. and the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners at 69 W. Washington, 6th Floor).
