3 arrested after allegedly assaulting an officer during a Shaquille O’Neal event in Livingston County

HARTLAND, Mich. (WILX) – Three people were arrested after a Howell man allegedly assaulted a Livingston County sheriff’s deputy at a Shaquille O’Neal event in Hartland.

On Friday, Sept. 27, officials said they provided security during Shaquille O’Neal’s visit to the new Big Chicken in Hartland. While there was a large crowd, a 21-year-old Howell man became confrontational with a police officer, according to police. A Livingston County deputy attempted to make contact with the man who assaulted the officer.

Police said the deputy then pulled out his Taser when a 48-year-old Brighton woman who was with the man attempted to disarm the deputy and, along with her 21-year-old daughter, prevented the deputy from calling him over alleged attempt to arrest assault on officer.

Two additional officers later arrived on scene to assist the first deputy and attempted to move the two women out of the way, resulting in the women falling to the ground.

Police said the 21-year-old man saw this and attacked the officer from behind, attempting to put him in a chokehold.

This led to the other two officers firing Tasers, but to no effect. The three officers managed to handcuff the man and arrest him.

The two women were then told they were under arrest, but they continued to resist and tried to run away but were eventually arrested. All three were taken to prison on multiple felony charges. The deputy who was attacked only suffered minor injuries.

The event went off without further incident.
