The community is mourning the loss of an Irving firefighter who died in a motorcycle accident while off duty

SPRINGTOWN, Texas (CBS News Texas) – An Irving firefighter died in an off-duty motorcycle accident Tuesday, the Irving Fire Department said.

Josh Brandes, a firefighter and paramedic, died in the accident at FM 51 and Lynch Bend Road in Springtown.

Decatur Police Department Chief Delvon Campbell said Brandes was also a reserve officer in his department for three years.

This past school year, he served as a School Resource Officer and left a lasting impression on students and faculty. His commitment did not go unnoticed; He was awarded the prestigious title of Reserve Officer of the Year at the department’s awards banquet in February.

According to Campbell, Brandes was known for his positive attitude and deep love for the Decatur and Irving communities. He said he often tried to “convert” Brandes from a full-time firefighter to a full-time police officer.

“My [fondest] I remember Josh stopping by my office one day last year when my daughter was really sick,” Campbell said. “We talked about our families as usual and before he left we prayed together. I will always remember Josh as a loving husband, father and Christian.”

“At this time, we pray for peace and comfort for his wife, children and the entire family,” the chief added. “Josh will be greatly missed.”
