Netflix adds A Confession, Martin Freeman's true crime drama

Netflix has added Martin Freeman’s harrowing true-crime drama A confessionprobably those Sherlock The star’s most difficult role to date.

The answerer The actor plays real-life Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who led the investigation into the disappearance of 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan from Swindon in 2011.

Originally shown on ITV in 2019, Netflix viewers in the UK now have the chance to watch the six-part drama, which examines how the police investigation led to taxi driver Christopher Halliwell (played by Ex). EastEnders Actor Joe Absolom), who was arrested for Sian’s alleged kidnapping.

Steve interviewed Halliwell, but without warning him beforehand, hoping that Sian was alive and he would reveal her whereabouts. However, Halliwell confessed to killing Sian and another young woman. It later emerged that it was Becky Godden-Edwards, who had been missing since 2003. The drama shows how Steve’s breach of the rules threatened the case and cost him his career.

Speaking about the drama at the time, Martin said: “I wasn’t familiar with the story but I watched interviews with Steve Fulcher and it was fascinating and what happened to him seemed unfair. First and foremost it’s the story of two girls who did and murdered their families, and then it becomes a story of this detective doing his best for them. He was a good cop and his work was a big part of his identity changed that…”

The series was also introduced The Crown’s Imelda Staunton as Becky’s mother Karen and Downton AbbeySiobhan Finneran plays Sian’s mother Elaine.

While researching the role, Martin met Steve. “It was really useful and the first time I had this opportunity playing a live person. You feel a sense of responsibility. “I met Steve before filming and he and his family came to set, I texted him when certain scenes were coming up.” It was nice to be able to ask, “What did you feel?”

As to whether it made him think about whether Steve’s actions were justified, he continued: “It did. For Steve, every decision was justified. If Halliwell had been taken back to the police station, his mission would have been to say, “No comment, but Steve was trying to find Sian alive.”

Christopher Halliwell pleaded guilty to the murder of Sian O’Callaghan in October 2012 and was sentenced to life in prison. In September 2016, Halliwell was found guilty of Becky’s murder and sentenced to life in prison, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Steve Fulcher later resigned from the police force.
