Dakota Fanning says she was asked “super inappropriate” questions as a child star

Dakota Fanning has revealed she was asked “inappropriate” questions as a child star in Hollywood and expressed “compassion” for others who had the same experience.

The now 30-year-old actress is best known for her early roles in films such as Man on fire And War of the Worldswhere she starred alongside big names like Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise. She started acting on television at the age of six.

The perfect couple star, who recently said having children was the “most important thing” to her, has reflected on how being in the media spotlight as a child actor is often uncomfortable.

In an interview with The cutFanning said the tabloid obsession with the likes of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan and the unfortunate impact it had on their careers had “shoved it deep down my throat.”

Fanning added: “I remember journalists asking me in interviews when I was young, ‘How do you avoid becoming a tabloid girl?’ People would ask completely inappropriate questions. When I was a kid, I was in a job interview and someone asked, “How can you even have friends?” It’s like that, isn’t it?

Fanning went on to express “compassion for people who have been made role models” and explained why she didn’t have the same problems. “I just didn’t fall for it and I don’t know the exact reasons, except that my family is made up of very nice, friendly and caring people,” she said.

She added that she is “respected as an actress and is as equal as one can be at this age.”

When asked about the media’s fascination with “fallen child stars,” Fanning said, “That’s the thing. It’s like: Do you want this to happen to me somehow? Do you want this to happen to these people?”

While Fanning acknowledged that she was “a little too young for it to fully affect me,” as she grew older, the motive of setting a youngster up for failure “kind of came to be recognized as probably not the best way to do people to treat”.
