US-40 closed in both directions after crash in Wasatch County

Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash that closed US-40 near Daniels Summit in Wasatch County.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at milepost 36, about 15 miles south of Heber.

Utah Department of Transportation officials said the road was closed in both directions.

Witnesses reported that at least one of the cars was severely damaged and a University of Utah AirMed medical helicopter was on scene.

It is not known how many occupants were in the two vehicles, but a woman and a three-year-old boy were pronounced dead.

UDOT traffic cameras showed a significant backup of at least two miles from the accident scene to Daniels Summit.

Officials said motorists should expect delays but said one lane was expected to open in the next hour and a half to one and a half hours.

A full opening of the highway will take several hours, UHP said.

Additionally, Utah Fire Info said that despite this closure, Highway 35 is still closed due to the Yellow Lake Fire and cannot be used as an alternate route.
